The sun shimmered through the waves above Seastar Lagoon. Marina swam happily to school, humming a little tune.
It had been a great week β first she saved a pearl, then helped Finley win the talent show!
When she reached the school gates, Coralina waved from across the courtyard.
βMarina! Guess what?β she said, her pink shell necklace jingling. βPrincess Pearl just invited me to help plan the Festival of Glimmering Fins!β
βThatβs amazing!β Marina said. βWe can both help decorate again!β
Coralina smiled proudly. βWellβ¦ the Princess said only one helper this time. She wants someone with a big personality.β
Marina blinked. βOh.β
Coralina twirled her tail. βIβm sure you understand. Youβre great at magic, but Iβm moreβ¦ sparkly.β
Marina forced a smile. βOf course! Youβll do great.β
But inside, her heart felt like it had sunk to the bottom of the sea.
A New Partner
At lunch, Finley and Sir Bubblesworth noticed Marina sitting quietly.
βWhatβs wrong?β Finley asked, munching on seaweed chips.
βItβs Coralina,β Marina said softly. βSheβs helping Princess Pearl with the festival. I thought weβd do it together.β
Sir Bubblesworth puffed up thoughtfully. βFriendship tides rise and fall, my dear. Sometimes friends just drift for a bit.β
Marina poked her lunch. βMaybe she doesnβt want to be friends anymore.β
Finley shook his head. βNo way! Coralina loves you! Maybe sheβs just busy.β
Marina smiled a little. βMaybe youβre right.β
Still, a tiny ache stayed in her chest.
A Sticky Situation
That afternoon, Mrs. Tulla announced, βClass, today weβll be cleaning up the coral courtyard for the festival!β
The class cheered. Everyone grabbed scrub brushes and shiny shells.
Marina floated near the coral wall, scrubbing gently. She didnβt notice Coralina swimming by with a bucket of sticky sea glue for hanging decorations.
SuddenlyβSPLAT!
The bucket tipped, and the glue splashed all over Marinaβs tail!
βOh no!β Coralina cried. βI didnβt mean toββ
But Marina couldnβt move. Her tail was stuck to the coral like a barnacle!
βHelp!β she squeaked.
Finley rushed over. βDonβt worry! Weβll get you out.β
Sir Bubblesworth puffed up in panic. βA tragedy! A tail tragedy!β
Coralina fluttered her hands. βI said I was sorry! Iβll fix it!β
Marina felt her face burn red. βItβs okay. Justβ¦ please, hurry.β
A Magical Mess
Marina took a deep breath. βIβll try my bubble magic to lift myself free.β
She waved her hands. Sparkly bubbles surrounded her tail β but instead of floating, the whole coral wall lifted up!
βMarina!β Coralina shouted. βYouβre moving the wrong thing!β
βI canβt stop it!β Marina yelled.
The coral wall wobbled, shaking shells loose. Finley darted forward and pushed Marinaβs tail gently.
βConcentrate, Marina! Think small bubbles, not big!β
She focused hard. Slowly, the coral wall lowered back into place.
The crowd of students gasped, then clapped.
βNice save!β someone shouted.
Mrs. Tulla swam over. βGood teamwork, class! And Marina, that was impressive control!β
Coralinaβs face softened. βIβm sorry, Marina. I didnβt mean to make a mess.β
Marina smiled. βItβs okay. I guess I overreacted too.β
The Apology Gift
Later that evening, as Marina swam home, she noticed something glowing near her shell door β a little box made of coral petals.
She opened it and gasped. Inside was a tiny pink shell charm shaped like a heart. A note floated beside it:
βFor my best friend. Iβm sorry. Letβs decorate the festival together anyway. β Coralina πβ
Marinaβs pearl necklace glowed softly.
She smiled. βGuess the tide came back after all.β
The next day, Coralina and Marina worked side by side, laughing and hanging glittery streamers.
βYou were right,β Coralina said. βYou make the decorations float way better than I can.β
βAnd you make them sparkle better than anyone,β Marina replied.
Finley zipped past carrying a lantern. βTeamwork for the win!β
Sir Bubblesworth floated behind them, bow tie shining. βIndeed! Friendship tides are back to high!β
The festival lights shimmered all around them, and Marina thought happily,
Magic is wonderful, but friendshipβ¦ thatβs the real treasure.
